Wait, Where did the weekend go?  My kids are out of school for Holidays Break and so my schedule is a little out of whack today.  I am doing the whole Christmas break old school style by not allowing my kids to be on devices for the next few weeks.  Well, see how that goes.  But I really think that it will be good for them. And maybe when they get older, they will remember this Christmas as one of their most favorite times in their life.  

And because devices are not allowed at all for the next few weeks, my kids and I are forced to be creative to pass the time away.  It was struggle for at least the first half of today.  My daughter actually told me that, "She wished that she was in school because it's so boring at home."  My kids just couldn't stand being bored so they are forced to think up of things to do on their own.  We have a library in our house so they decided to read some books.  My 6 year old finished a whole chapter book in one setting.  The power of no TV or Ipads!  My daughter had this bright idea to play "Library."  LOL.  Where they set up shop in the library and get all of their stuff animals and Barbies to check out the books.  They made their own checkout and sign up sheets.  And they even made a late fee sheet to fine those who returned their books late.  They played Library for many hours.  

I wasn't feeling too well today so it was very good that my kids could play Library and being quiet is something rare for them.  But hey, it's the perfect game for quietness.  Because no one is supposed to be talking in the library.  LOL

Creating family traditions is an especially important part of raising a family. The traditions and rituals you build together will follow each child and you through your entire life. Whether it’s religious, cultural, or unique to your own immediate family does not matter – the traditions have many benefits. Traditions build a sense of belonging, builds their identity, advances moral values, and so much more. 

  • Offers Children a Perception of Identity – The memories you make together literally shape your family in the mind of your children. Whether it’s about religion, culture, or fun, the traditions you keep are important to a child’s sense of who they are and where they belong. 
  • Reinforces Morals, Principles, and Values – When you develop family traditions, they also say something about the morals, principles, and values that you find important in life. You’re sharing those through tradition and example with your kids, and that makes a significant difference by solidifying the ideas into their minds and memories. 
  • Opportunity to Role Model – Whether you’re modeling nightly before meal prayers or you’re modeling being available for the family by disconnecting electronics at dinner, every holiday gives you a chance to model good behavior to your kids and others. 
If you have kids, maybe you can challenge your kids to go a few days without their devices.  You never what other creative talents that they will develop to fill the void.  And if your kids are all grown up, then maybe you can make a challenge for yourself.  By putting away your phone and computer for a few hours a day or even a few days and find inspirations and joy in other hands on activities.  Trust me, it will be so good for your mind, body, and spirit.  You never know how much creativity and ideas will flow through you on your technology break.  And the motivation that you will have when you get back to work.
