The Holidays is one of my most favorite time of the year.  Because it is so festive and I just love the smell of Christmas in the air.  I love the smell of firewood coming from everyone's fireplace.  The smell of cinnamon and hot chocolates in the air, everywhere that I go.  And hussle and bustling of shoppers in all of the stores.  And don't forget all of the great things to look at (and trying not to buy).  I just love the festivities and feeling of joy everywhere.   I am always looking for ideas for fun holiday things to do with my kids without breaking the bank.  Kids will not remember what toys they got on Christmas day but they will always remember the fun times and experiences that they spent with their families.  And I really want my children to have fond memories of Christmas and family in their hearts and minds when they get older. 

So here are some fun and festive things to do this holiday season without breaking the bank. 

  • Host a Movie Night – Find some holiday-specific movies, pop some popped corn, get some movie candy, and set up your home like a movie theater. The cool part about hosting at home is that you can plan other activities during the night, like a candy scavenger hunt or having everyone dress in movie characters. 
  • Volunteer in Your Community – Every child needs to learn that some people have struggles that they’re fortunate enough not to suffer, but that it’s their job to help. It feels good to help. Children of all ages can help with volunteering to buy gifts for an Angel, and older children can help feed people in a soup kitchen. You can also volunteer at a local senior center performing or hosting an art class. 
  • View Christmas Lights – A fun and inexpensive (just gas money) activity near Christmas and after Thanksgiving is over is driving around to look at the Christmas lights. Most communities have at least one street or community that goes all out. Kids love looking at the lights, and it’s fun witnessing the holiday spirit. 
  • Go Christmas Caroling – If you and your family like to sing, you can grab some neighbors and yourself and start singing Christmas carols around your neighborhood. This is fun, and you’ll get to know more of your neighbors.
