Is Fear of Success Really a Thing?

Could the Fear of Success Be Holding You Back

Given the option, most people want to succeed. Under normal circumstances, being at your best is the goal. It might be surprising to know while most people say they want to be successful, many people actually fear success. Some don’t even know it until it’s a problem.

Fear of success isn’t a myth, it’s a real problem that a lot of people don’t understand until they find themselves sabotaging their own success. Sadly, people often find themselves subconsciously affecting their success without even knowing it because many of their thoughts and feelings about success aren’t triggered until success begins to emerge.

Fear of success really is a thing, and it can be holding you back from the level of success you claim to want. Fear of success is different than fear of failure. Fear of failure includes beating yourself up for missing the mark, whereas fear of success includes anxiety that you’ll be unable to manage the changes that come with success.

There are a lot of reasons people fear success. Some of the most common are-

  • Imposter syndrome
  • Fear of judgement
  • Fear of the unknown

Common fear: Being an imposter- Imposter syndrome is the belief that you aren’t as capable as you seem to others. The internal dialogue going on in your head makes you feel like you’re faking it and don’t really deserve the success you have. The sense of being ‘found out’ can gnaw at your confidence and cause you to self-sabotage.

Common fear: People are judgmental- Many people fear success because they worry they will be judged and the external desire for acceptance and approval can sabotage success. Worrying about people’s perceptions and opinions can influence your behavior and keep you from being successful.

Common fear: What might happen- One of the biggest common fears that sabotage success is the fear of not knowing what might happen. The thing is anything could happen. Fear of the unknown is often tied to mindset. People who have a negative or worrisome mindset often predict roadblocks on the way to success rather than all of the opportunities.

Fear of success really is a thing. It can prevent great people from reaching their goals. It doesn’t have to get in the way of being the best you can be. Simply recognizing if you’ve experienced any of these common fears could give you a clue. Once you are more aware, you can make a plan to prevent fear from stopping you.
