Why Scheduling a Bathroom Break Boosts Your Productivity

Productivity Hacks for Working Smarter

Being productive is all about channeling focused energy for periods of time without distraction. One of the reasons people are unproductive is they lack the ability to stick with things long enough to see them through. Avoidance, procrastination, and side tracking all botch productivity plans; yet, calculated breaks are a key component of high productivity.

Put Your Mind on Pause

Our brains are magnificent and they are designed to work, even when we sleep. Even the smartest brain needs a break throughout the day. Taking a moment to pause and step away from work helps our brains refresh, reboot, and become more productive.

Our minds get tired and we need to stop for a moment to shift our focus so our mind can take a break. Have you ever noticed when you consistently do something like stare at a puzzle, all the pieces begin to look the same? Stepping away helps your brain take a breather and refresh and come back to the project with boosted energy and enthusiasm.

Hacks That Help

There’s a difference between taking a break and avoiding or procrastinating your tasks. The key is being purposeful with your plan. Here are some hacks that help-

Schedule a bathroom break- You don’t have to wait until you have to go, to go. Scheduling a bathroom…or any other, break can help you step away from your project long enough to refresh your mind and your body. Make sure your break is at least five to fifteen minutes every hour.

Make lunch a priority- You may or may not crave a good hand-crafted sandwich each midday, but taking that break is important for your productivity. Our minds do better with at least a thirty-minute break every two to three hours. Plus, keeping your blood sugar stable helps with focus, stamina, and concentration. Make certain you eat healthy foods when you are trying to remain productive. From writing reports to a day of yard work, breaking for lunch is important.

Read a book or take a power nap- Your brain does better when it shifts its focus throughout the day. Your mind can become fatigued when it is focused on one thing for too long. Enjoy an alternate activity that uses another part of your brain for a while. If you are being physical, do some puzzles or read a book. If you are using your mind to calculate numbers or solve complex problems, go for a run or walk outside.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward to

If you start your day determined to be productive, but have no breaks planned until the end of the day, your mind may rebel against you. When your mind knows a break isn’t far off, it can muster the determination and concentration for short bouts of time knowing a break is coming. Give yourself something to look forward to and you’ll achieve more in shorter periods of time.
